What happens when you delete your account
You can delete your Joysts account yourself, any time, from Settings → Privacy & data. This page lists exactly what that does, in order, and what you can check afterwards. The full policy is in our Privacy Policy.
1.Before you delete
Settings → Privacy & data opens with What we store about you: live counts of your homes, documents (and their total size), photos, findings, facts, chat messages, maintenance tasks and service log entries, reminders, share and capture links, and notifications. Those numbers are your before state.
If you want a copy first, Download everything gives you a ZIP with every document and photo you uploaded, in a folder per home, plus a JSON file with the rest of your record.
2.The steps, in order
- Subscription. If you pay for Joysts Complete, we cancel the subscription with Stripe, Inc. first. If that cancel fails, we stop and delete nothing, so you are never left with a bill and no account to stop it from.
- First count. We count everything your account holds, with the same queries the Settings page uses.
- Files. We delete every file stored under your account (documents, photos, and cached map and street images) from our file storage, Cloudflare R2. Cloudflare states that a deleted R2 object cannot be recovered. If storage is down at that moment, your account is still deleted; we are alerted and remove the leftover files with a cleanup tool.
- Database. We delete your account row. Your homes and everything under them (documents, facts, findings, systems, maintenance, service log, reminders, chat history, links, notifications) are deleted with it, in the same database operation.
- Second count. We run the same count again, by your account ID and the IDs your homes had. Every number must be zero. If one is not, we are alerted and remove it by hand, and your email says what was left.
- Analytics. We ask PostHog to delete your analytics profile and its usage events. PostHog completes that in the background. If the request fails, we are alerted and delete the profile by hand.
- One last email. We send a confirmation to your address with the receipt below. It is the only email you get after your account is gone.
3.The receipt you can check
The confirmation email has a section called Your deletion receipt. For example:
Compare the before line with what you saw in Settings. The after line is never written from a guess: if the second count could not run, the email says that instead of “0”. It also says plainly if file storage or the analytics request did not finish, and that we will finish it by hand.
4.Copies that expire on their own
A few of our providers keep short-lived copies we cannot delete on demand. They expire on a fixed schedule:
- Anthropic (reads your documents and answers questions): deletes what we sent within 30 days, or up to 2 years only for a request its systems flag under its usage policy. It does not train on this data.
- Resend(sends our emails and receives documents you forward to your home's address): keeps messages for 30 days.
- Inngest (runs document reading in the background): keeps job logs, which can include text read from your documents, for 24 hours.
- Neon (our database): keeps a restorable history of recent changes for 6 hours. After that, your deleted rows are gone from it too.
5.What is outside our control
When Joysts builds a home's record, it looks up the address with Google Maps, the US Census geocoder, and public-records services (Realie for parcel records, PermitStack for permits). Those lookups carry the address only, never your name, email, or documents, but each service keeps its own request logs under its own policy, and deleting your Joysts account does not reach them. Our Privacy Policy lists each one and what it publicly says it keeps.
6.What we keep
- Payments: if you ever paid, Stripe, Inc. keeps its own payment records under its privacy policy and the law.
- AI cost log:each AI call's model, token count and cost. It holds no document content and no link to you once your account is deleted.
- Records we must keep to meet legal, tax or accounting duties, or to resolve disputes.
